Moon Viewing Festival【月見】

With a history dating back over 1000 years, Tsukimi【月見】is one of Japans oldest festivals. This festival is all about celebrating the mid-autumn full moon which happens to mark the beginning of harvest season. Farmers would celebrate and make offerings to the forest spirits in hopes of a bountiful, and safe harvest season. It is very common to see symbolic references to rabbits around this time as Japanese folklore suggests the rabbit was the first inhabitant of the moon. If you look closely at the shadows of the moon you can even see the rabbit pounding mochi.

Cultural Insight

Tale of the Moon Rabbit

Long ago, a moon spirit came to earth disguised as an old beggar. He happened upon a fox, a monkey, and a rabbit. The beggar asked them to help him gather food. The fox brought fish from the stream and the monkey fruit from the trees. However the rabbit only knew how to gather grass. Wanting to help the beggar, the rabbit asked the man to build a fire. The rabbit then made the ultimate offering and hopped into the fire. Touched by the rabbit's generosity, the beggar returned to his original form and rescued the rabbit. To honor the rabbit's kindness, he brought the rabbit back with him to the moon.

Tsukimi Dango

A quintessential dish of Tsukimi, Tsukimi Dango is made up of 15, perfectly round, rice dumplings. These represent the 15 nights of the 8th lunar month. These are traditionally arranged in a pyramid on top of a shinto offering stand, called a Sanbo 【三方】and displayed in view of the moon as an offering to the moon.
